The Schumpeter book is a nice touch i would also recommend Mariana Mazucatto also. She has done a lot of work into innovation and private/public relationships. Innovation is such a tricky topic my MBA had two classes on it. As you said it is essential for economic growth, but even Adam Smith trouble by the cost that it would have on human capital.
