Remembering Robert Solow: Economist and Humanitarian

In Memoriam: Robert Solow (August 23, 1924 - December 21, 2023)

On December 21^st, 2023, Robert Solow, an excellent economist and a true humanitarian, passed away. As we reflect on his remarkable life and contributions, we would like to celebrate his legacy and shed light on his insights as an economist and a compassionate thinker who cared deeply about societal issues.

A Unique Approach to Economics:

Many of us were fortunate to learn from Robert Solow, either directly or indirectly, through his writings and lectures. One of his most notable qualities was his ability to simplify complex economic concepts. As recalled by Steven Levitt, his teaching approach was to break down intricate economic theories into clear, straightforward explanations. This approach left a lasting mark on his students and colleagues, emphasizing the importance of finding simplicity in the most intricate problems.

On Economic Growth:

Throughout his famed career, Solow made significant contributions to the understanding of economic growth. He emphasized that economic growth, while crucial, should not be an end in itself. Instead, he argued that a focus on economic growth should be accompanied by thoughtful consideration of its implications for society, equity, and the environment. Solow challenged the notion that growth was the only measure of a healthy economy.

Addressing Inequality: 

Solow was acutely aware of the rising inequality in society. He believed that extreme wealth disparities were not just economically inefficient but also morally troubling. He was concerned that concentrated wealth could lead to imbalances in political power, and he advocated for a more equitable society. He saw inequality not merely as an economic problem but as a political and societal challenge.

Growing up during the Great Depression, Solow's early experiences shaped his perspective. He witnessed the struggles and insecurities faced by his own family and countless others.
