As we prepare students to enter the labor market, it is important to recognize that some of our advice is outdated. The whole idea of stable jobs and moving up the corporate ladder at a single firm is a thing of the past. Median employee tenure a job is around 4.3 years and I suspect that this number will decrease post-covid.
Students need to develop transferable skills and be able to articulate their value to firms. I work with students to help them shift from task-oriented employees to being thought leaders. This shift in mindset is difficult because society (read this as parents) want their kids to have jobs. They want them to be trained for a specific job. I, on the other hand, want to prepare students to be problem solvers.
Jobs and tasks change as markets innovate, but problems will always exist.
This week’s video is about the economics of building a brand. Share it with your friends and students. Help them stand out!
